Everyone backpacking to India is pretty much aware of and probably flocking to The Golden Temple in Amritsar and the crazy bike temple in Rajasthan, where all roadies must pay homage, but here are still some undiscovered unique temples that crave worship and admiration; in this vast country now filling fast with backpackers, there yet remains the road less traveled. 156 Acre temple in Tamil NaduSrirangam Temple is the biggest functioning Hindu Temple in the world. Enclosed in a six mile perimeter of prakarams (outdoor patio), are 49 Vishnu shrine temples, and a small but a thriving market city ebbing closer and closer to the temple premise. Temple of all faiths: Hindu, Christian & MuslimA proud landmark & important institution of the intellectual Kolkata; Belur Math lies on the coast of Ganges (Ganga). The temple is the heart of the headquarters of the Ramakrishna movement based on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. It is famous for its architecture that blends Hindu, Christian & Islamic themes as a metaphor for the oneness of religions. 7th Century temple of singing pillarsRiver lovingly called Porunai (by poets) snakes around the Nellaiappar Temple in Tamil Nadu. Carved 3,000 years ago, this sculptural wonder has many exciting features; my favourite are the musical pillars, which produce sounds in many pitches when whacked. Also check out the 1000 pillared hall (Somavara Mandapam) and Tamra Sabha with wood carvings.
There is much to see in India. It can keep you amazed for years, like it has kept me. Enjoy your trip and hit me up if you have any questions.
