How much does it cost?
You can eat a meal starting at Rs 10 in India. If you want to stay off the delicious (often tougher to digest) street food, an average one person meal should be between Rs 100 to 250. Fine dining choices in India are pretty much the same as elsewhere. The best fine dining venues are located in the bigger towns and cities. They are very Western in their approach and ambience, and start at round Rs. 1000 (18$) per head, and range up to approximately 5,000 (90$). Liquor separate.
What is Indian food mainly made up of?
Here are a few examples of different Indian cuisines.
There is Punjabi cuisine – the typical Chicken Tikka and Panner Tikka, if you have heard of these dishes. Rajasthani – Daal, Baati (a unique round spherical bread with a hard crust, and soft, buttery inside), Churma (milk and butter sweet), spiced pickles, and layered breads made of nine grains. Andhra – spicy, spicy fish fry with coconut and different dips. Goan – sea food, primarily, along with varieties of buttered rice.
Each state you travel to will have its own unique cuisine. Remember, try everything, (even street food) but start small. In the first few slowly eaten bites, you will be able to gauge whether your tummy is taking the food well or not.
How do I pick a restaurant?
The best way is to ask. People in India love to talk. If you walk up to a stranger in the street and ask for a restaurant recommendation, you will most likely leave with the name of ten. Asking other travellers would be a good idea too.
Zomato has a pretty neat collection of restaurants, pubs and bars. Their coverage is good too. But, of course, they don’t cover everything. So, trust your traveller instincts.
Tip: Remember, if your body rejects something at the first bite, DO NOT EAT MORE. Remember, you are in a different country, far from the weather and water that your body is used to. Pay heed to what your body needs to eat, and you should be free of tummy trouble.
